Oi reaches 19% market share in São Paulo at end-2010 – Brazil

Brazilian telecoms operator Oi (NYSE: TNE) reached a market share of 19% in the São Paulo metropolitan area at end-2010, and about 14% in São Paulo state, company investor relations director Alex Zornig said during a conference call.

The operator launched operations in São Paulo two years ago. “We are already profitable in that region,” Zornig said.

Oi recorded a total of 39.3mn mobile subscribers at the end of the fourth quarter, an increase of 8.8% year-on-year.

The operator’s market share in the mobile segment reached 19.4% on a national level in Q4, versus 20.8% in the year-ago period. 3G subscribers grew 33% year-on-year, to 624,000.

Oi posted a net profit of 284mn reais (US$173mn) in the fourth quarter of 2010, compared with a net loss of 597mn reais in the same quarter the previous year.

Revenues for Q4 reached 7.3bn reais, down compared with 7.6bn reais in 4Q09, while Ebitda came in at 2.28bn reais, up from 2.21bn reais in the year-ago period.
