Australia proposes free-trade agreement with U.S.

WASHINGTON—The prime minister of Australia will propose a free-trade agreement (FTA) with the United States when he meets with President George W. Bush on 10 September. The United States exports telecommunications and information technology equipment to Australia, which is the country’s second-largest trading partner after Japan.
John Howard said a FTA with the United States could be difficult to negotiate. The Australian government is expected to ask to lower most tariffs to zero.
A report released last week by the Australian government said both the U.S. and Australian economics could expand by US$4 billion with an agreement.
