LAS VEGAS-Research In Motion Ltd. and Neomar Inc. announced a deal to extend the wireless reach of RIM’s popular BlackBerry devices.
Under the deal, the two companies said they will give business customers the ability to securely access enterprise applications beyond simply e-mail and calendar functions. RIM’s device, which has become a wireless mainstay in the business world, is generally used to access corporate e-mail and calendar information.
The deal centers around Neomar’s enterprise server and microbrowser software, and includes three separate functions. First, Neomar’s microbrowser software will be able to run on RIM’s BlackBerry, allowing users to securely access WML enterprise data and applications. Second, Neomar’s Enterprise Server software, along with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software, will give BlackBerry users access to business data on the server. Both Neomar and RIM’s business servers reside behind the corporate firewall. Finally, the BlackBerry service will include Neomar’s Secure Enterprise Router Proxy to allow Neomar’s WML browser to connect to the company’s enterprise server.
Company executives said the deal will allow BlackBerry users to add multiple additional business applications, and will enable continuous encryption at all points between the corporate servers behind firewalls-a must for security conscious businesses.
“By adding Neomar’s software for secure, high-performance delivery of mission-critical data, BlackBerry becomes an even more powerful tool for enabling corporate users to make wireless their competitive advantage,” said William Winters, Neomar’s chief executive officer.
