Metrocall buys Radiofone paging assets

ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Metrocall Inc. moved to bolster its subscriber base and retail operation by purchasing the paging assets of Radiofone and Beepers Unlimited from Alltel Corp. The company will acquire the existing Radiofone customer base and 33 Beepers Unlimited retail outlets in five southeast states.

The agreement also includes a reseller arrangement, allowing Alltel to sell Metrocall’s wireless messaging products and services in its retail stores in the New Orleans-Baton Rouge region.

Metrocall said the move strengthens its existing customer and retail base in the states of Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas.

“This agreement is characteristic of Metrocall’s strategic vision of adding additional customers and retail outlets in markets that offer strong growth potential,” said William L. Collins III, Metrocall’s chairman and chief executive officer. “As new wireless technologies surface, Metrocall continues to improve our market share in key areas with the latest products and services sold via our various tiers of distribution.”
