WASHINGTON-President Bush on Friday appointed Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell to a second term that runs through June 2007.
Powell’s current five-year term ends July 2, 2002. Powell, a Republican who has exhibited a strong deregulatory bent since being named chairman in late January, has served as an FCC commissioner since November 1997. Bush designated Powell FCC chairman on Jan. 22.
“I am gratified by the confidence President Bush has indicated in my tenure as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission,” said Powell in a statement.
The Senate Commerce Committee likely will have Powell join other FCC nominees Kevin Martin (Republican,) Kathleen Abernathy (Republican) and Michael Copps (Democrat) at the same confirmation hearing. No date has been set.
