The NGA was launched by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), as an initiative to advance North American wireless technology leadership over the next decade

ATIS’ Next G Alliance (NGA) has published a new white paper that looks at the transformative role that future 6G technology is expected to play in enhancing integrated sensing and communication systems.

NGA said that next-generation systems will enable distributed sensors and communication networks to implement an integrated exchange of data, allowing systems of sensors to work together. These will provide the network with critical analytics to upgrade configurations and improve performance, NGA said, adding that these systems will enable new user capabilities.

“Nearly all markets with use cases in this application class will experience the impact of 6G distributed sensing innovation,” said Next G Alliance Managing Director David Young. “These include health care, public safety, agriculture and environmental monitoring, and the new NGA report focuses on the potential impact in the critical sectors of health care and public safety.”

“One of the aspirational roles that 6G can fulfill for us is the intelligent collection, processing, and distribution of data to authorized users or applications whenever and wherever needs arise,” said Ki-Dong Lee, chair applications working group. “Aligned with Next G Alliance’s six audacious goals, this report explores use cases that can bring value to daily life. These include an improved quality of communication experience (sensing-assisted communications, SAC) and enhanced awareness of circumstances of interest (communication-assisted sensing, CAS). Moreover, utmost attention is given to ensuring the security and privacy that matter most to data owners or authorized users,” he added.

The Next G Alliance was launched by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), as an initiative to advance North American wireless technology leadership over the next decade through private sector-led efforts with the initial focus on as-yet-unstandardized 6G.

In May 2023, NGA announced the publication of a report dubbed “6G Roadmap for Vertical Industries”, which focuses on the demand side of future 6G systems.

The report builds on the NGA’s 2022 roadmap to 6G report, which established the North American vision for next generation communications systems. That report explored how 6G technology can help meet the applications needs of a broad range of industries including agriculture, automotive, education, gaming and entertainment, eHealth, industrial, mining, public safety and smart cities.

NGA noted that the report traces the implications of vertical-specific use cases into applications that future 6G technology can enable and highlights promising technologies that need to be researched and engineered into operational systems.
