NEW DELHI, India-Thai cellular companies foresee a big jump in use of WAP phones during 2001.
About 70 percent of the 1.4 million new handsets that Advanced Info Service (AIS) expects to sell this year will use WAP technology, according to Yanyong Akrajindanon, vice president of marketing. Currently, about 10 percent of customers now use WAP for mobile Internet access, he was quoted as saying by Thai newspapers.
Yanyong said most users try the service for fun, but the company intends to add new content for business soon. The most popular WAP services are content, such as news, weather and stock information.
Total Access Communications (TAC), the second-largest operator, also expects that half the 1 million new subscribers it forecasts this year will use WAP. TAC plans to introduce WAP-based mobile banking shortly.
