Three companies remain in French license contest

PARIS-Just days before the French closing date for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System applications, two companies dropped out of the contest, leaving only the country’s three incumbent operators vying for four licenses.

The French government may have to lower the fees it set last year during UMTS license auctions in other European countries that drew unprecedented levels of revenues for governments.
