WASHINGTON-Eight wireless location companies announced they have joined together to form the Wireless Location Industry Association, created to act on behalf of wireless location firms as a whole.
Founding members include Cell-Loc, GoAmerica Inc., Cambridge Positioning Systems, Indexonly Technologies Inc., SignalSoft, iProx and ViaVis Mobile Solutions. It will be based in Washington, D.C.
The association said it aims to become the voice of the emerging wireless location industry, interfacing with government, administrative and regulatory bodies and creating a forum to develop self-regulating policies, network and share information among members of the industry. It also plans to provide references and information about the industry to the public and to policy-makers both domestically and internationally.
John Jimison, a Washington-based attorney, was named the WLIA’s executive director and general counsel. Claudio Rodrigues of Cell-Loc was named chairman of the interim board of directors.
Other companies have expressed interest in the group, such as SiRF Technology, InfoSpace and Barpoint.
“The wireless location space is one of the most exciting new industries in the entire technology sector,” Jimison said. “WLIA’s founding members recognize the tremendous opportunity before them and are very committed to the great public-interest responsibility they shoulder as pioneers in this new industry.”
