FRANKFURT-Deutsche Telekom subsidiary T-Mobile International has signed two separate deals with Nokia Corp. and Nortel Networks to supply its third-generation network infrastructure in Europe.
The separate agreements, valued at about $320 million each, will enable Nokia to introduce seamless multimedia services for T-Mobil in such places as Germany and the United Kingdom, while Nortel Networks’ products will provide the key backbone to build 3G services and provide radio access technology in Germany, the United Kingdom and Austria.
“With our choice of preferred suppliers, we have not only laid the cornerstone for a uniform UMTS network within the TMO group, we have also assured the delivery of high-quality UMTS networks,” said Kai-Uwe Ricke, chief executive officer of T-Mobile International.
Mark Tharby, Nortel’s vice president for wireless Internet strategic marketing, said the deal demonstrates his company’s dominant UMTS presence with awards estimated at more than $2.1 billion this year.
“This is another sign that the marketplace is embracing our wireless Internet strategy, and a great way to crown our UMTS success in Europe this year,” said Pascal Debon, Nortel’s president in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
