PARIS-Alcatel said Hanaro Telecom, the South Korean carrier, has signed up more than 10,000 local multipoint distribution system customers, reaching a critical milestone in its broadband wireless network deployment. Alcatel said further extensions of its contact with Hanaro, announced earlier this year, will occur during the next few months to support the increasing subscriber base.
Hanaro launched LMDS service in July and offers high-speed Internet service in densely populated areas throughout South Korea, including the Seoul metropolitan area, Pusan and Jeju.
Hanaro has added about 1,000 new customers per week.
