ADC Telecommunications Inc. announced it signed a $16 million contract to supply GVT Brazil with a broadband access bundled solution for the southern and central regions of Brazil. ADC said the solution is based on the BroadAccess Multiservice Access Platform and delivers narrow and broadband services.
SLOVENIA
Audiovox Communications Corp. said it is marketing its GSM dual-band wireless handsets through the Slovenian carrier Mobitel Inc. Avtoakustika doo, a fulfillment house in Slovenia, will provide the sales, warranty and marketing support and fulfillment services to Mobitel on Audiovox’s behalf.
UNITED KINGDOM
Voice interface software developer Nuance announced three new customers in its European market. Xelion, a subsidiary of UniCredito Italiano, will use the company’s speech-recognition software to deliver stock quotes and trading applications. Sharepeople, an online brokerage company in the United Kingdom, plans to offer voice-driven trading and portfolio management, and Cosmote, a wireless carrier in Greece, will use Nuance technology for its voice portal application.
BOLIVIA
STM Wireless Inc. announced Entel Bolivia chose STM’s broadband system for its service rollout in Bolivia and other Latin American countries. Entel said it intends to use STM’s SpaceWeb terminals for direct broadband access to the U.S. backbone.
GERMANY
Telefonica Moviles selected Lucent Technologies Inc. as one of the suppliers of its Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services network in a $800 million deal. The UMTS network will be part of Telefonica’s third-generation consortium in Germany with the Finnish operator Sonera. The company said the move will form the basis for a collaboration among the other companies in Austria, Italy and Spain-areas Telefonica has UMTS licenses.
NORWAY
Norwegian GSM operator Telenor Mobil and Nokia Corp. announced they will cooperate on initial deliveries of wireless local area networks for traffic-intensive locations in Norway. The deal calls for Nokia to supply the access points and controllers, which the companies hope will allow Telenor to offer 11 Megabits per second access to intranet or Internet services. The companies plan to offer the service in a variety of locations, including hotels, transportation areas and airports.
