Ericsson joins MSSA for NTN

Network equipment vendor Ericsson has joined the new Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN)-focused industry advocacy group, MSSA, that is focused on the use of satellite spectrum for direct-to-cellular device and IoT communications.

There are two broad approaches to NTN direct-to-cellular (D2C, sometimes also direct-to-device or D2D), when it comes to spectrum. Satellite companies can make arrangements to work with mobile terrestrial network operators to lease terrestrial spectrum—as is the arrangement being used in NTN partnerships between T-Mobile US and Starlink, or AT&T and Verizon’s respective work with AST SpaceMobile—or, spectrum that has been allocated to mobile satellite service (MSS spectrum) can be used.

The Mobile Satellite Services Association, or MSSA, launched in February of this year and is interested in backing an ecosystem that uses L- and S-band spectrum that is already allocated and licensed for MSS, saying that the bands are “well-suited for integration into a broad range of mobile devices.” The group consists mostly of MSS spectrum holders, with members including Viasat and Ligado Networks, among others.

“Through MSSA, Ericsson is keen to advance the goal of ubiquitous connectivity through the integration of terrestrial and space-based networks,” said Freddie Södergren, head of technology and strategy at Ericsson’s Business Area Networks. “Integrating Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) with land-based cellular networks has the potential to enhance mobile coverage and reliable connections globally.”

“MSSA is excited to add Ericsson to our growing membership roster and further advance our goal of delivering an affordable, seamless user experience through the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks”, says Mark Dankberg, board chairman of Mobile Satellite Services Association, who is also CEO of Viasat. “Our forum for collaborative development on technical standards and best practices grows with every new member, strengthening our ability to support the emerging D2D ecosystem.”
