Seven regional firms of KDDI Group merge

TOKYO-Seven regional companies of KDDI Group on 1 November merged to form a new company called “au.” KDDI decided to merge these regional companies to better compete with giant NTT DoCoMo.

However, former IDO Corp., an operator covering the Tokyo metropolitan area, joined KDDI, rather than au, and Okinawa Cellular Telephone, an operator under KDDI Group providing services in Okinawa prefecture, did not join au either.

Both business sectors-the former IDO and Okinawa Cellular-will continue to sell their products and services under the brand name of au.
