BUCHAREST, Romania-Slovakian operator Globtel prefers a “beauty contest” process of licensing the country’s third-generation (3G) licenses. Eva Forraiova-Guttlerova, the company’s public relations manager, said the beauty contest system is more fair, because the monetary amount is influenced by service use.
Using an auction, license fees could be excessively high, negatively influencing operators, the price of the service and the future expansion and development of the telecommunications market in Slovakia, she said.
“We should realize that providing of UMTS services not only involves a high license fee, but also high investments to the network building,” said Forraiova-Guttlerova. “For example, in the most progressive markets in North European countries, where the licenses were dispensed with low fees, the development of the services benefited, as well as the whole info-communications society.”
