Japan gives up on 5 GHz band for wireless access

TOKYO-The Japanese government decided not to use the 5 GHz band for wireless access services in an open field. An advisory body for the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications on the same day concluded it is impossible for wireless services operators to share the band with a meteorological radar and an earth observatory satellite.

The band was drawing attention because wireless operators can provide wireless services at a lower cost if they use the band. Some Japanese wireless operators were promoting their research and development effort to launch their services using the band.
