BOSTON-Nortel Networks said it will conduct a 10-week trial of its new e-mobility Location Communications Service, which is designed for travelers, visitors, college students and new residents and provides location-based information and services wirelessly.
The service trial will include maps, find-it services for restaurants and retail outlets, and directions to subways, cabs and bus stops. The service also will include news, weather and sports.
Trail participants will receive a Palm handheld computer that includes a global positioning system transceiver.
Nortel’s new service is part of a larger location-based solution of the company’s Wings of Light strategy, which will combine optical, wireless and Internet Protocol capabilities.
