NEW DELHI, India-HFCL, a basic service provider in the Punjab circle, has entered into a strategic alliance with U.S.-based UTStarcom to deploy India’s first PHS system.
Announcing the tie-up, HFCL managing director Mahendra Nahata said the association with UTStarcom would help develop a world-class telecom infrastructure in India. UTStarcom CEO Hong Lu said his company has been watching the developments in the Indian market closely and is excited about the prospects of setting up a strong base in India.
Basic service providers have only recently been allowed to deploy limited mobility wireless local loop (WLL) systems.
UTStarcom’s Personal Access System (PAS) technology is one of the largest deployed limited mobility WLL networks in China with 2.5 million subscriber lines of installed capacity in 70 cities. UTStarcom expects such a growth could be repeated in India too.
Lu said UTStarcom plans to invest in networks in India to demonstrate the PAS system’s rapid service deployment and high customer satisfaction.
