NEW YORK-AT&T Corp.’s board of directors is meeting this week to discuss several issues, including a spinoff of the company’s consumer long-distance business and a possible merger of AT&T Wireless Services and Nextel Communications Inc., according to The Wall Street Journal.
AT&T Wireless and Nextel reportedly had been trying to complete a merger agreement before the board meeting but the two sides haven’t been able to resolve some major issues about price and management, and an agreement now is questionable, the Journal said.
AT&T Wireless wants its chief executive John Zeglis to be chief executive officer and chairman of the merged company, while Nextel is pushing for its CEO, Tim Donahue, to be the new entity’s CEO and have Zeglis act as chairman.
