Motorola signs GSM contracts in China

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s Network Solutions Sector signed seven digital cellular network expansion contracts, valued at a total of $258 million, with China Unicom to enhance the operator’s GSM network in China.

The contract calls for Motorola to expand China Unicom’s GSM 900 networks in Guangdong, Fujian, Jiangxi, Shanxi and Xinjiang provinces, plus China’s special economic zone of Shenzhen. The expansion, expected to increase network capacity by 3.5 million subscribers, is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

In addition, Motorola will also deploy a GSM 1800 system for China Unicom in Guangdong province with a total capacity of 800,000 subscribers. The contracts also provide licensing and joint-venture agreements with Eastern Communications Co. Ltd. and Guangzhou Jinpeng Group Co. Ltd. to manufacture, distribute and provide service for Motorola’s GSM and CDMA cellular infrastructure products within China.
