TOKYO-NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop a new service that combines DoCoMo’s i-mode service and SCEI’s Playstation.
Under the terms of the agreement, DoCoMo and SCEI will jointly combine Playstation with conventional i-mode, Java-enabled i-mode and wideband Code Division Multiple Access technologies.
DoCoMo supported more than 8 million i-mode users at the end of June, and the carrier plans to introduce W-CDMA services in May.
“Both firms hope their collaboration will inspire software makers to develop new services for a potential new i-mode/Playstation entertainment network,” the companies said.
In addition, the firms will jointly develop an i-mode and Playstation connecting cable, which SCEI will manufacture and market. The specific content of the new service is still under consideration.
