FCC to auction 172 licenses for 24 GHz

WASHINGTON-The Federal Communications Commission said it will auction 172 10-year licenses to offer fixed-wireless service using spectrum located in the 24 GHz band.

“The auction for the first time will make 24 GHz spectrum available on a nationwide basis … The flexible and streamlined service regulations proposed by the FCC will enable companies like Teligent [Inc.] to continue to deliver the benefits of the Telecommunications Act of 1996-lower costs and greater choice-by providing advanced communications services to customers that have been overlooked and underserved,” said Laurence E. Harris, Teligent senior vice president and general counsel.

The FCC will allow bidding credits for companies that qualify as very small businesses (gross revenues not exceeding $3 million; 35-percent credit), small businesses (gross revenues not exceeding $15 million; 25-percent credit), and entrepreneurs (gross revenues not exceeding $40 million; 15-percent credit).

Licensees will be allowed to offer a variety of fixed-wireless services using the spectrum located at 24.25-24.45 GHz and 25.05-25.25 GHz, the FCC said.
