Americans want location services for safety reasons

SEATTLE-Personal safety tops the list of reasons why most Americans want location-based services, according to a study conducted by Integrated Data Communications Inc.

The study, conducted for a wireless data and location services provider, found most Americans want their location transmitted in case of an emergency or when they need roadside assistance or directions.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents indicated they are interested in location-based services, with more than one-fourth indicating they are very interested in the services. Only 3 percent of Americans currently subscribe to a location-based service plan, said the survey.

“The number of Americans who use or are interested in location-based services is significantly larger than the percentages associated with wireless Internet access, wireless e-mail or wireless information services,” said Dan Allen, IDC’s president and chief executive officer. “This survey confirms there is considerable consumer `traction’ and perceived value for these new services.”
