The president of Brazil’s telecom regulatory agency Anatel, JoĂŁo Rezende, said investments for the deployment of next-generation telecommunications services could reach $1.93 billion (R$4 billion) over the coming years.
In an interview posted by ConvergĂȘncia Digital, a RCR Wireless News syndicate partner, Rezende noted Anatel was correct in including countryside coverage among requirements for recently auctioned LTE licenses. Read the full story at ConvergĂȘncia Digital (in Portuguese).
The $1.41 billion (R$2.93 billion) total amount obtained from the spectrum license sales were below pre-auction expectations of $1.86 billion (R$3.85 billion).

Rezende also noted that Anatel might review future auction rules to allow smaller companies to bid on spectrum licenses. The LTE auction resulted in domination by the country’s four largest operators. Anatel’s next spectrum auction is expected to include licenses covering the 3.5 GHz band.
“At 3.5 GHz, we can regionalize the spectrum in order to attract small investors,” said Rezende, who did not dismiss the fact that future auctions could include the remains of the LTE auction, which includes 53 lots in the U Band (35 megahertz of TDD spectrum) and 34 lots of the P Band (10 megahertz of FDD spectrum).
