Almost one year after acquiring the Wi-Fi company Vex, Brazilian telecom carrier Oi announced that it has integrated both companies’ networks. As part of the integration, Oi changed the name of Vex‘s service to Oi WiFi, and it is expanding Oi’s services to Vex customers, including 2,200 hotspots, of which 1,600 were previously owned by Vex.

In addition, Vex’s customers will be directed to download Oi’s free Android application to connect their devices automatically to the Internet using the carrier’s hotspots. The Android application also works to improve Oi subscribers’ experience when switching from 3G to Wi-Fi networks.
Oi launched its strategy to offer customers Wi-Fi coverage locally and internationally in 2011 to strengthen its position as a complete Internet access provider in Brazil. “To invest in Wi-Fi is also cheaper than investing to increase our 3G network,” said Abel Camargo in a recent interview with RCR Wireless News. Camargo did not disclose how much the company has invested in its Wi-Fi business.
Oi’s Wi-Fi strategy includes deployments of both indoor and outdoor networks. Although they use different technologies, the user experience is the same. In addition to installing hotspots in high-use areas, such as malls or airports, the carrier uses a Wi-Fi sharing service to boost access for enterprise clients, according to Camargo. Oi also has about 25 outdoor hotspots.
