A number of telecommunication service providers have implemented software-defined networks within their infrastructure arrangements. Recently, AT&T announced a shift to SDN as part of its new supplier program strategy, and it is not the only telco to do so. A range of vendors have released new products to aid in SDN deployment, including OpenDaylight, which unveiled a new open source software platform in early February. Alcatel-Lucent also recently made a range of new options available for clients seeking SDN solutions.
With so many organizations utilizing SDN technology within their networks, it is no doubt that such systems have myriad benefits to offer service providers, especially within the telecommunications sector.
Cloud advantages
In the current market, nearly every business and vendor has leveraged the cloud in one form or another. As cloud-based technologies develop, SDN systems within data centers can help telcos stay ahead of the curve. With SDN components in place, data centers supporting telecommunication processes are better linked. InformationWeek noted that this type of strategy has the capacity to make cloud deployments, including individual cloud establishments, a more streamlined process among data center and vendor locations.
Reduce network complexity
Network World also pointed out that an early advantage of SDN implementation is that operators see a reduction in network complexity. Mark Leary, The First Tracks chief analyst, noted that many SDN arrangements are compartmentalized.
"You can drop them into some part of your network to reduce complexity and see immediate benefit," Leary said. "Consolidation around a central control structure allows for greater automation. That's where you can see a lot of immediate impact."
When networks are less complicated, the telecom's IT team can easily maintain the technology while ensuring their focus does not lack in other mission-critical areas of the company.
Improved content delivery
Another key advantage of SDN technology is enhanced content delivery, which can lead to boosted customer satisfaction. Information Week explained that clients in a range of industries are demanding higher quality content, including high definition visuals and voice capabilities. To address these needs, telecommunications vendors should have SDN components in place to increase network responsiveness. This will ensure that information, materials, calls or streaming media being transmitted over the network is "near-flawless."
Operational cost savings
While not the primary goal for the majority of vendors, SDN can deliver cost savings as an added benefit. Silver Peak Systems noted that operating expenses can be considerably reduced through the use of SDN technology, especially through automating and streamlining processes to take stress of the IT team. According to Deloitte Consulting's Chris Weitz, organizations can save as much as 50 percent on their networking bills as a result of SDN deployment.
