GTE, Embratel start roaming alliance

TAMPA, Fla.-GTE Telecommunication Services Inc. and Brazil’s Embratel announced an alliance to provide roaming interoperability services to the Mercosul trading region in Latin America. The agreement is the first of its kind in the region and will be available in the first quarter.

The Mercosul region in Latin America-including the economies of Brazil, Argentina, Uraguay, Paraguay and Chile as an associate-is one of the fastest-growing trade regions in the world with a gross domestic product of $1.3 trillion in 1997, according to GTE.

“These services will enhance those we already offer in Brazil to wireless operators,” said Jorge Rodriguez, president of Embratel. “These services will bring better roaming system administration to operators, including online information and monitoring capabilities.”

Plans also call for a Mercosul-based user’s group to be formed. The group will meet independently as well as join GTE TSI’s existing user’s group.
