BEIJING-Nortel Networks announced that its joint venture, Guangdong Nortel Telecommunications Equipment Ltd., was awarded contracts valued at $64 million by China Unicom and Anhui Mobile Communications Corp. The contracts are for new Global System for Mobile communications network construction in the Henan and Anhui provinces.
The Henan branch of China Unicom will purchase more than $50 million in switching and base station equipment for the second phase of its network buildout, which is expected to increase capacity to 380,000 subscribers.
Anhui Mobile Communications is building a GSM 1800 network valued at more than $13 million for up to 170,000 subscribers.
