WHEATON, Md.-The transition to third-generation technology must be revolutionary rather than evolutionary, according to a new study by Herschel Shosteck Associates Ltd. titled, “Third Generation Wireless (3G): Why, When and How it Will Happen.”
The study said the 3G revolution must occur on two fronts-from the technology side as well as from the business-case perspective.
“If the 3G revolution is to provide value for end users, it must come from new, expanded and/or improved applications,” said Herschel Shosteck, president of the firm. “Raw bandwidth by itself won’t do.”
The study predicts the market case for 3G will evolve from the group of people who, since adolescence, have had ubiquitous access to the Internet as well as mobile communications. The study also predicts that the winners in 3G may not be the current players, but rather companies outside the industry that are not constrained by the current viewpoints of the industry.
