Netro Corp., a California-based broadband wireless access systems provider, announced release 2.0 of its AirStar point-to-multipoint system.
Release 2.0 adds two new frequency ranges-the 39-GHz range and the 10-GHz range-expanding Netro’s addressable market into the United States and Latin America. The company’s product already supports the 26-GHz frequency range, which addresses portions of Europe and Latin America, said Netro.
“Many of our customers have pieces of frequency all over the world,” said Cynthia Hillery, vice president of marketing at Netro. “We, as a vendor, must support a wide range of frequencies.”
The company also said it improved AirStar’s system price performance and expanded the amount of service revenues carriers can generate. Release 2.0 increases channel capacity, enabling individual subscribers to burst up to the port density and capacity of the sector control hardware. In addition, the company’s CellMac networking protocol allows AirStar to dynamically allocate bandwidth to individual subscribers.
The new release allows carriers to support intelligent signaling of voice applications and frame relay data services to increase service revenue and save on equipment costs, said the company.
Netro has been field testing Release 2.0 since July. The product has been tested by Lucent Technologies Inc. at its Wireless Broadband Network Division, which resells the AirStar product as OnDemand Wireless Access under a global original equipment manufacturer agreement with Netro.
