VELOCOM’S BRAZIL OPERATIONS TO MARKET VESPER

DENVER-VeloCom Inc. announced its consortia in Brazil, Canbra Telefonica and Megatel do Brasil, will market their telecommunications systems under the name Vesper, effective Oct. 1.

In January, Canbra was awarded a “mirror” license to provide fixed telecommunications services in 16 states in northern Brazil, including the state of Rio de Janeiro. In April, Megatel won the license to serve the state of Sao Paulo. Service is expected to launch in 42 cities by the end of the year. The two companies will provide service to 75 percent of Brazil’s 160 million inhabitants, said VeloCom.

Megatel awarded a $470 million five-year project to Lucent Technologies Inc. to supply its 1.9 GHz Code Division Multiple Access wireless network.

The equipment will be used to build a high-speed telecommunications system throughout the state of Sao Paulo.
