The following list details this week’s infrastructure awards for the cellular, Wi-Fi, and WiMAX industries. The contracts are broken down by transmission technology, country and vendor. The value of the contract is included when available.
Cellular
–American Samoa: Nortel Networks said it signed a contract with American Samoa Telecommunications Authority to expand its network with Nortel’s 3G CDMA 1x EV-DO Rev. A solution. The network covers Tutu’ila, Aunu’u and the three Manu’a islands.
–China: Motorola said it won a contract with China Telecom to upgrade a portion of the carrier’s nationwide CDMA2000 1x network to include next-generation broadband data capability and advanced multimedia services. Motorola said it will provide CDMA radio access infrastructure for 42 cities in nine provinces.
–China: China Mobile chose Alcatel-Lucent and Datang Mobile to provide equipment for the second phase of the carrier’s TD-SCDMA mobile network trial. The entire deployment will cover 28 cities, with the Alcatel-Lucent/Datang Mobile consortium providing equipment for 11 of the cities.
WiMAX
–Costa Rica: ICE chose Alvarion to supply its 4Motion WiMAX solution to enable broadband service in San Jose and rural areas of Limon. The contract is valued at $6 million.
Wi-Fi
–China: Aruba Networks said Fuzhou University has deployed its Aruba’s Wi-Fi network equipment across its campus in Fujian Provice. The campus covers 800,000 square meters and supports more than 25,000 students.
–United States: WAAV said the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has chosen its AirBox X2 dual connection cellular router to provide free public wireless Internet on any U.S. commuter rail system. The rollout, which is expected to be completed next year, will include Wi-Fi equipment on 258 commuter rail coaches.
