Several mobile and wireless companies have made this year’s list of the world’s most ethical companies, chosen by Ethisphere. Companies are ranked based on their internal ethics and compliance programs, their corporate citizenship and responsibility, and accepted norms of ethical conduct within the company. Reputation, leadership, innovation and corporate governance are also part of the equation. 144 companies were named this year, and 21 received the honor for the first time.
T-Mobile U.S. was the only U.S. wireless carrier to make the list this year. Among telecom and wireless equipment makers, Cisco, Juniper and 3M all made the list.
Dell, Intel and Texas Instruments made the list in the hardware category. Intel is a major supplier of wireless modems and is working hard to increase market share in the applications processor space. Intel is also moving into network function virtualization (NFV) through a partnership with Alcatel-Lucent. Dell is a top vendor of servers for network operators, and is working hard to help providers virtualize their networks through a partnership with Red Hat Software. Texas Instruments is a top supplier of chips for base stations and small cells.
Google and Microsoft both showed up on the list, but not Apple. The Cupertino company’s well-publicized problems with its Asian manufacturing facilities may have contributed to its omission. Another software company on the list is Symantec, which just this month demonstrated its corporate citizenship by sharing data on how hackers can use SMS messages to atttack ATM machines.
Accenture was singled out among business services companies. Mobile operators are an increasingly important customer group for the software and services company. Data warehousing powerhouse Teradata also made the Ethisphere list.
