SCHAUMBURG, Ill.-Motorola Inc. said it plans to incorporate Sun Microsystems’ Jini
technology into a Motorola networking software project code-named Piano.
Currently in the research and
development stage, Piano involves technology that would enable most electronic devices to be aware of other nearby
electronic devices and be capable of wirelessly networking with them, according to Motorola. When these Piano-
enabled devices come into physical proximity with one another, they automatically detect each other’s presence.
Jini
is a Sun project that expands on the power of Java technology, allowing networking of a wide variety of hardware and
software.
Motorola envisions using both technologies will enable users of cellular phones, pagers, personal digital
assistants and other mobile devices to create a personal wireless networking space in the area immediately around
them.
Among the devices in this networking space, Motorola and Sun anticipate the use of small Jini-equipped
gateways that would connect with the Internet or local intranets.
Motorola has been concentrating with Piano on
using the Bluetooth Special Interest Group plans for wireless data communications, said Motorola.
