CellPoint Systems AB and its partner Wasp International of South Africa demonstrated a Global System for Mobile communications phone positioning system at the 2nd International Conference on Mobile, Location & Transport Telematics in London. AU System-which is owned by L.M. Ericsson, Telia AB, Cellnet, Motorola Inc. and Schlumberger-participated in the project.

Millicom International Cellular S.A. said Societe Europeenne De Communication S.A.’s registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has been declared effective. SEC was formed to take advantage of the deregulation process in the European telecommunications market. The joint venture is owned 35 percent by MIC and 45 percent by Industriforvaltnings AB Kinnevik, assuming the offer being made by Kinnevik to its U.S. shareholders is fully subscribed, said the companies. SEC includes Tele2 Europe and Transcom Europe, Tango, 3C and Transcom International.

Latvia

Nokia Corp. announced it signed a three-year deal with Latvian Mobile Telephone Co. to expand a Global System for Mobile communications at 900 MHz network. Nokia previously was named LMT’s exclusive GSM provider. Shipping for the recent agreement will begin next year, the company said.

France

French manufacturer Tekelec Temex introduced a global positioning system product designed for integration with digital cellular handsets made by original equipment manufacturers. The Epsilon Board OEM features a specially designed GPS clock for third-generation wideband technologies, the company said.

Inventel Systemes of France introduced a pager called the Pocket Navigator, a four-line alphanumeric device capable of storing large amounts of database information, said the company. Its 13,000-character memory and hypertext links allow users to navigate through the information stored on the device, much like a Web browser. The Pocket Navigator stores information in a tree-like structure, rather than a stack format, which the company said is easier to access and organize.

China

Glenayre Technologies Inc. announced it received a $6 million volume purchase order to expand the Wanlitong Paging nationwide network in China.
