MELBOURNE, Fla.-AirNet Communications Corp. said it was awarded a contract valued at about $30 million from Carolina PCS to supply the C-block operator with personal communications services equipment. AirNet also plans to assist Carolina PCS with obtaining third-party financing.
Phase one of the contract calls for AirNet to supply a complete Global System for Mobile communications base station subsystem, including an operations and maintenance center, base station controller, transcoder rate adapter unit and all associated cell sites. Some of the cell sites will be equipped with broadband base transceiver stations, and the rest will be configured with AirSite backhaul-free base stations.
Carolina PCS’ licenses cover nine contiguous basic trading areas in South Carolina and neighboring areas in Georgia and North Carolina covering 3.2 million pops.
