NEW YORK-Analog Devices Inc., Norwood, Mass., plans Oct. 12 to make available to all wireless handset and aftermarket device manufacturers its full-duplex, voice-activated system for hands-free wireless phone kits.
“The solutions provided today by cell phone makers and aftermarket companies primarily are half-duplex,” said Kenneth Waurin, marketing manager for Analog Device’s embedded speech processing solutions.
“That means if you’re on a cellular phone talking to someone on a landline phone, both parties can’t talk and listen at the same time.”
Half-duplex systems also provide “poor speech quality plus the phenomenon of speakerphone-induced echoes,” he commented.
Analog Devices has been working with top-tier handset manufacturers on its solution, which comprises its 16-bit digital signal processor, an analog front end, hands-free capabilities and voice-recognition software, Waurin said. The DSPs are programmable to permit fast addition of value-added features.
The package, which is wireless network technology-independent, is available to all phone and aftermarket manufacturers. “Before this, you’d have to go to a silicon provider to get the best hardware platform, then go to a software developer to determine the best software to run,” Waurin said. “Our end objective is to minimize our customers’ time to market by offering a total solution.”
