ADC TELECOMMUNICATIONS
ADC Telecommunications Inc. released its Soneplex management access point for Simple Network Management Protocol that allows carriers to convert the 1970s vintage TBOS signaling protocol to SNMP. Soneplex enables carriers to migrate from the alarm contacts and standard Telemetry By the Oriented Serial network management protocol-prevalent in legacy telecommunications and wireless networks-to a newer management protocol. For wireless providers, the transition from TBOS to SNMP has been difficult in cell sites where alarm contacts, TBOS and SNMP must be supported in a small area, said ADC. The Soneplex SNMP MAP is designed to ease the transition because it is able to do so on a single SNMP interface. The MAP can provide up to six TBOS or Telnet interfaces and 48 contact alarm closures in a single rack unit. It has a list price of $6,000.
Uniden
Uniden America Corp. introduced a cellular analog handset called the MiniCel and the ALP9094 Contaq IV, a four-line text and numeric pager. The MiniCel uses Uniden’s patented Monitor Mode technology that provides a one-way speakerphone function, which is useful when listening to voice mail messages, said Uniden. The handset, weighing in at 4.2 ounces, also features one-touch emergency dialing, authentication and auto pin technology. MiniCel is available in black or champagne and comes with an AC adapter and headset jack for hands-free use. Contaq has 100,000-character and 40-message storage capabilities. It can be programmed with a customized logo and has eight reminder alerts plus a silent mode. The FLEX-based pager offers Quickview, an automatic display of the newest message or mail drop, to view news, weather and stock information that scrolls across the bottom of the screen. Uniden said its cellular division is developing personal communications services products. Uniden America Corp. is the North American subsidiary of Japan-based Uniden Corp.
Motorola
Motorola Inc.’s Commercial, Government and Industrial Solutions Sector displayed the ruggedized version of its digital portable radio, the XTS 3000R, at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International Inc.’s annual conference in Albuquerque. The new radio is designed to withstand conditions that public-safety and public-service personnel often face on the job, such as exposure to smoke, dust, vibration, moisture and high and low temperatures. The XTS 3000R is designed to work after being left underwater. The control knobs on the radio can be distinguished by touch, and are set farther apart to make the radio easier to operate for firefighters and others who wear protective gloves. The radio is available in black and public-safety yellow.
TeleworX introduced ParametriX, a new switch data display software tool to provide radio-frequency engineers a way to access, evaluate and geographically view switch data from a wireless system. ParametriX tracks and analyzes switch parameters at the cell level, enabling RF engineers to visualize wireless network performance characteristics and locate and correct performance problems. The software tool is designed to complement TeleworX’s existing RF design and optimization tool, called Xcalibur. Features include comprehensive statistical reporting and analysis capabilities, and a full selection of reports, plots, graphs and other forms of output to support the results of any analysis. “ParametriX enables engineers to cut through the reams of switch data emanating from a wireless system and isolate the specific data that they need to perform their engineering tasks,” said Jose Rodriguez, president of TeleworX. “Users can then analyze and view the selected information in a customized environment, and get straight to the answers they need.”
Spectrian
Spectrian Corp. introduced its SC5000W single-carrier power amplifier subsystem for wireless local loop and wideband digital data systems. The amplifier is in field trials in Asia and the United States, and is scheduled to be available for commercial service applications during the first half of 1999. Spectrian said it will demonstrate SC5000W at PCS ’98 Sept. 23-25 in Orlando, Fla.
