Motorola Inc.’s Mexican offices reported one of its employees was killed last weekend in Juarez, Mexico, the apparent victim of an ongoing drug war in the region that has left 34 dead this year.
Hector Francisco Gonzalez Gomez worked for Motorola’s Mexico City-based unit. Published news reports said he was found dead with three other communications workers in the trunk of a car. The four were communications technicians installing anti-eavesdropping devices for the state police.
Rival cocaine cartels are fighting for control of the border town, which shares a bridge across the Rio Grande with El Paso, Texas. Its location has made it a recent focal point for drug smuggling in recent years, and the U.S. State Department recently recommended visitors to the area exercise a high degree of caution.
Motorola issued a statement after three more people were found dead in a similar manner last Thursday. Police said they have not yet determined if the two cases were related. “Motorola cannot speculate about the motives of this tragedy and trusts the official investigations will resolve the case and punish the guilty,” read the statement.
