JAPAN LAUNCHES CDMA

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Three of Japanese cellular operator DDI Corp.’s regional service providers launched commercial Code Division Multiple Access service in Japan, according to Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group.

Service is available in 177 cities, including Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto, Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Naha, plus 440 towns and villages, said Motorola.

Five other DDI regional service providers plan commercial cdmaOne launches between December and April, extending cdmaOne service to more than 800 cities, towns and villages.

When IDO, another leading Japanese cellular operator, launches its commercial cdmaOne service in April, the combined service territories of the two companies will encompass nearly 2,000 cities, towns and villages nationally.

Until then, Motorola said DDI’s cdmaOne customers with dual-mode handsets will have nationwide coverage through an existing Motorola analog network.
