FWT Inc. announced its first installation of the PowerMount antenna system on anything other than an electrical transmission tower-this one inside the legs of a Shell Oil Co. sign at a gas station in North Attleboro, Mass. The new site is part of a network expansion for a wireless carrier along the Boston-Providence corridor along Interstate 95, said FWT. The carrier’s expansion area is near the Massachusetts-Rhode Island state line.
Brightpoint Inc. announced it extended its agreement with Omnipoint Corp. subsidiary Omnipoint Communications Services L.L.C. through March 31, 2000. Brightpoint provides the carrier with inventory management, end-user fulfillment, specialized packaging, return management and accessory programs, as well as repair and refurbishment services.
Conductus Inc. said it received an order from a U.S. government contractor, Booz-Allen & Hamilton, for additional production units of wireless subsystems that are a modified version of Conductus’ commercial ClearSite product. Production work is scheduled to begin immediately, with product shipment slated for the third and fourth quarters.
UniSite Inc. announced plans to build about 50 towers for OnQue Communications in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas, as part of a new strategic build-to-suit relationship with the personal communications services provider. “Our team plans to break ground for the first tower in Arkansas in early August,” said Ricardo Loor, vice president of business development for UniSite.
Heartland Wireless Communications Inc. introduced its new high-speed wireless Internet services, called HeartNet, in Sherman, Texas. The suite of services provides Internet access at downstream speeds of about 768 kilobits per second using line-of-sight microwave frequencies. “With our wireless infrastructure already in place, high-speed Internet service is a very sensible business proposition that allows us to pass cost savings along to the customer,” said David Heintzelman, director and general manager of Internet service for Heartland.
