Facebook is stepping up its mobile game.
The wildly popular social networking site has seen the number of wireless users triple this year, exploding from 5 million to 15 million active mobile Facebookers, according to a Facebook engineer’s post on the company’s Web site.
“This may not seem like much, but it was actually part of a really important change,” engineer Wayne Chang wrote. “As people on Facebook share more and more information each day, status updates have become one of the most popular ways for people to connect quickly and easily from the site. . People are hungry for interactive mobile features worldwide, and Facebook users are no exception.”
While dozens of smaller players vie for attention, Facebook and MySpace are leveraging deck space and high-profile brands to gain an early advantage in mobile social networking. A recent survey from ABI Research found that 46% of those who use social networks have also visited communities through a phone, with 70% of those visiting MySpace and 67% visiting Facebook. No other social networking site attained 15% adoption in mobile.
