Western Wireless International announced it began Global System for Mobile communications cellular service in Iceland through its TAL Ltd. partnership. The initial network covers about 70 percent of the Icelandic population.
Nexus Telocation Systems Ltd. said it was selected by a South American communications services company to provide its Nexus Vehicle Location and Tracking System. Nexus already has received an initial order valued at $6 million for infrastructure, user devices and support service and has plans to begin work covered by the new contract during the fourth quarter.
Copesa Comunicaciones Personales S.A. selected Northern Telecom Inc. to supply its nationwide personal communications services network in Paraguay using Global System for Mobile communications technology in a deal valued at about $30 million. The first phase of the project will provide PCS services in and between the capital city of Asuncion and Ciudad del Leste by the end of the year, said Nortel. The network is expected to serve up 100,000 subscribers. Nortel said the 1900 MHz GSM network for Copesa will mean it has supplied wireless networks in Latin America using all three major digital technologies.
Motorola Inc.’s Asia-Pacific Paging Networks Division was awarded an expansion contract from China Unicom Paging Corp. valued at more than $1 million to supply the paging operator with more than 100 Nucleus transmitters. China Unicom now provides nationwide roaming service to 43 cities in China and plans to extend coverage to 100 cities, said Motorola.
EuroTel Praha, a wireless carrier in the Czech Republic, introduced an Internet-based account management service for mid- to large-sized business customers seeking access to account information and cost management solutions associated with their mobile services. Customers can view encrypted files containing monthly billing details by account, by group, by user or even by individual call from any computer with Internet access and a Web browser. Information then can be transferred to internal customer accounting systems for additional report tailoring, analysis and records archiving, said the company.
