WASHINGTON-Attorney General Janet Reno last week sought an independent counsel to investigate Labor Secretary Alexis Herman in connection with allegations that Herman used her influence as a former White House aide to secure Democratic campaign contributions and that she personally profited from helping Mobile Communications Holdings Inc. obtain a mobile satellite license from the Federal Communications Commission.
“Although our investigation has developed no evidence clearly demonstrating Secretary Herman’s involvement in these matters, and substantial evidence suggests that she may not have been involved, a great deal of Yene’s story has been corroborated,” stated Reno in the federal appeals court filing last Monday.
Laurent Yene is the African businessman who charged last November that Herman was part of a scheme whereby she would receive 10 percent of any business she facilitated for her former firm, International Investments and Business Development.
IIBD, which Herman once owned with friend Vanessa Weaver, was later run by Weaver and Yene before Yene left after a professional and personal falling out.
