To the editor,
I just finished reading your Jan. 12 issue and truly take exception with the letter titled, “Home won’t run via paging service.”
The population of Montreal and its surroundings just lived through the worst ice storm of the century. The blackouts created by this storm were enormous in proportion and two weeks later we are still living with a shortage of electricity, due to fallen transmission lines.
The local hydro company keeps asking people to limit their consumption at the peak hours (4 p.m. to 9 p.m.), but get limited support. Therefore, they have to resort to controlled blackout to be able to distribute the electricity. I am positive the hydro company would love to be able to control the appliances that consumes most of the power from a distance via a paging service. What a bonus this type of control would provide them.
Instead of looking at the negative side of an idea, Miguel Lecuona should review the positive side of home paging service. We in the Montreal region now realize how precious electricity has become to our daily lives and appreciate how fragile it is when nature decides its time to cleanup.
