STOCKHOLM, Sweden-L.M. Ericsson introduced what it said is the world’s first Global System for Mobile communications triple-band base station system that will allow wireless operation in the 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz frequency bands from a common physical infrastructure.
The system will be more effective at providing service in densely populated areas, such as major international airports, congress centers and large cities, Ericsson said.
“All major infrastructure elements in the network, such as the base station controller, mobile switching center, and so forth, run all three bands,” said Karl-Magnus Geinrichs, product manager at Ericsson Radio Systems. “All an operator needs to do to support GSM 900 triple-band operation is to add a 1900 MHz range BTS to the existing single or dual-band base stations.”
