SCHAUMBURG, Ill.-Motorola Inc. announced the forthcoming availability of a small Personal Handyphone System handset.
Motorola said the phone will be available in Japan through NTT Personal Communications Network Inc. under the name 32K Paldio 311M. Release of the phone is planned for early December.
PHS is a digital microcellular technology designed to blend wireless communications between the home, office and mobile environment. Motorola’s handset can switch automatically from being a home cordless phone to a mobile phone within the PHS public network.
The PHS market has proven to be popular with the younger generation in Japan. Motorola developed a PHS handset to seize this market trend. The company expects the Paldio to appeal widely to teenagers and business users alike. By using a clam shell design, the company has achieved a further reduction in size, leading to the invention of a phone at 62 cubic centimeters and weighing 79 grams.
