NEW YORK-WinStar Communications Inc. acquired 16 additional 38 GHz licenses, increasing its bandwidth in four of the top 50 U.S. markets, said the company.
The Federal Communications Commission granted WinStar 11 of the 16 licenses, for which the company had filed before the commission stopped accepting 38 GHz license applications. WinStar holds definitive purchase agreements to acquire the other five licenses, subject to FCC approval.
The licenses add one channel in WinStar’s Seattle market, two channels in Miami and one channel each in New Orleans and San Antonio. The licenses also extend coverage to new markets including Akron, Ohio; Bakersfield and Fresno, Calif.; and Colorado Springs, Colo.
The licenses cover a population of about 20 million.
