IRVING, Texas-Nokia Corp. announced its new Time Division Multiple Access IS-136 wireless handset, called the Nokia 2160i, will be equipped with a Nokia-developed enhanced full rate vocoder.
The EFR ACELP vocoder delivers enhanced digital voice quality, the company said, and has been chosen as the TDMA industry standard. Developed jointly by Nokia and the University of Sherbrooke in Canada, it facilitates the conversion of analog speech into a digital data stream, which then can be modulated for transmission.
