PAC BELL TURNS ON PCS IN CALIF., NEV.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Pacific Bell Mobile Services launched its personal communications services network, based on the Global System for Mobile communications standard, in Bakersfield and the Central Valley, Calif.

The area is considered a major growth market, the company said, as wireless competition has been slow to arrive. The newer section links the San Diego, Las Vegas, Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area regions to now cover an area north to Sacramento, south through Los Angeles and San Diego, and east to Las Vegas.

The company said it invested $700 million for the entire network.
